Design and Technology at Ingleby Mill Primary

In Design and Technology, children will be helped to see the ever-changing technological world around them. They will be able to appreciate how innovative designs over time have helped to make our lives easier and that we too, can be involved in this exciting process. We will create opportunities for children to respond to problem solving situations and come to realise that they are acquiring skills they may need in order to become the future generation of designers.

Children will become critical thinkers and learn to analyse existing products before progressing on to planning for, and thinking of, designs of their own to meet a design criteria. They will learn to evaluate designs and models made and suggest improvements where appropriate.

Handling of tools safely will be an important part of the learning process and the appropriateness of the choice made in using these.

Similarly, a safety focus will be put on the handling of food technology equipment and the food itself as part of the ‘Food and nutrition’ aspects of the curriculum. A varied approach to the children’s learning will be offered with purposes to the opportunities made available, whereby linking learning to their own experiences.

Pupils will be encouraged to consider the diverse career opportunities this area of the curriculum offers and it is hoped that links can be created between learning in school and wider experiences be these locally, nationally or globally.

Children will be supported to know that designs can be individual in response and that there are different interpretations to a brief. This individualistic approach reflects our belief that children are very much their own person with their own unique traits and qualities whilst still being able to work as part of a team.

It is our intention to raise the profile of Design and Technology within school, across all ages. We aim to help children to do this through a broad and balanced curriculum, an exciting planned programme of work with relevant opportunities for the children to link their learning in other subject areas through topic work connections.

VALUES – Across all areas of learning we value:
Happiness – when we enjoy what we are doing, we learn at our best
Confidence – when we have confidence, we will always ‘have a go’
Creativity – when our creativity is developed, we can think and learn in imaginative ways
Perseverance – when we are encouraged to keep going, even when the going gets tough, we develop resilience, positive outlooks and self-belief
Respect – when we are respectful, we see things through the eyes of others

The National Curriculum and the programmes of study have been considered during the planning stages. It is acknowledged and understood that for those pupils in the Foundation Stage opportunities will be on-going and varied. Children will be encouraged from their earliest entry into school to become active and interested creative learners and thinkers.

Further information regarding the programme offered to the children is highlighted in the Curriculum overview for Design and Technology which outlines our broad and balanced curriculum.
