French at Ingleby Mill
We support the view that learning a foreign language is an entitlement for all pupils during their time in key stage 2. Children really enjoy learning a foreign language and we know that the earlier they are exposed to a foreign language, the faster the language in question is acquired. At Ingleby Mill we have chosen to teach French from year 3 to year 6 (key stage 2) through a carefully planned curriculum holding to the widely accepted view that the early acquisition of a foreign language facilitates the learning of other foreign languages later in life.
Weekly lessons are timetabled and language learning has three core strands:
learning to communicate (with the emphasis on oracy ie listening, speaking and interacting)
learning about language (this involves reading and writing – learning about the writing system, spelling and structure of the language)
learning about and comparing different cultures (inter cultural understanding)
VALUES – Across all areas of learning we value:
Happiness – when we enjoy what we are doing, we learn at our best
Confidence – when we have confidence, we will always ‘have a go’
Creativity – when our creativity is developed, we can think and learn in imaginative ways
Perseverance – when we are encouraged to keep going, even when the going gets tough, we develop resilience, positive outlooks and self-belief
Respect – when we are respectful, we see things through the eyes of others
