Music at Ingleby Mill
Music is a powerful, unique form of communication that can change the way pupils feel, think and act; it brings together intellect and feeling and enables personal expression, reflection and emotional development. As an integral part of culture past and present, it helps pupils understand themselves and relate to others, forging important links between home, school and the wider world. The teaching of music develops pupils’ ability to listen and appreciate a wide variety of music and to make judgements about musical quality. It encourages active involvement in different forms of amateur music making, both individual and commercial, developing a sense of group identity and togetherness.
In our school, we make music an enjoyable learning experience. We encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences through which we aim to build up the confidence of all children. Singing lies at the heart of good music teaching. Our teaching focuses on developing the children’s ability to sing in tune and with other people. Through singing songs, children learn about the structure and organisation of music. We teach them to listen to and appreciate different forms of music. As children get older, we expect them to maintain their concentration for longer, and to listen to more extended pieces of music. Children develop descriptive skills in music lessons when learning about how music can represent feelings and emotions. We teach them the disciplined skills of recognising pulse and pitch. We often teach these together. We also teach children to make music together, to understand musical notation, and to compose pieces.
We have a wonderful, well-resourced music studio in school which is time tabled for music lessons throughout the week. Children across school have access to a wide range of tuned and untuned musical instruments and resources including IT-based resources; Garage Band and Charanga.
At Ingleby Mill, every child in key stage 2 learns to play the recorder. Children in year 4 have their music lessons enriched with a 10-week block of Samba drumming tuition from Tees Valley Music Service. We also have good musical links with a local secondary school.
Whenever we can, we take up opportunities to perform. Performing in school happens during lessons, in class assemblies and in end of term performances. Beyond school we have sung carols at Tescos at Christmas as well as performing with other local schools in a massed TVMS singing event ‘Snappy Christmas’.
Parents can opt for their child to receive individual and group instrumental lessons with external music providers, TVMS or Rock Steady Crew.
VALUES – Across all areas of learning we value:
Happiness – when we enjoy what we are doing, we learn at our best
Confidence – when we have confidence, we will always ‘have a go’
Creativity – when our creativity is developed, we can think and learn in imaginative ways
Perseverance – when we are encouraged to keep going, even when the going gets tough, we develop resilience, positive outlooks and self-belief
Respect – when we are respectful, we see things through the eyes of others
