Design and Technology at Ingleby Mill

In Design and Technology, children will be helped to see the ever-changing technological world around them. They will appreciate how innovative designs over time have helped to make our lives easier and that we too can be involved in this exciting process. We create opportunities for children to respond to problem-solving situations and come to realise that they are acquiring skills they may need to become the future generation of designers.

Children will become critical thinkers and learn to analyse existing products before progressing on to planning and thinking of designs of their own to meet a design criteria. They will learn to evaluate designs and models made and suggest improvements where appropriate. Handling tools safely will be an important part of the learning process, as will a safety focus on the handling of food technology equipment as part of the ‘Food and Nutrition’ aspects of the curriculum.

Pupils will be encouraged to consider the diverse career opportunities this area of the curriculum offers. Children will be supported to know that designs can be individual in response and that there are different interpretations to a brief — reflecting our belief that children are very much their own person with unique traits and qualities, whilst still being able to work as part of a team.
