French
French at Ingleby Mill
We support the view that learning a foreign language is an entitlement for all pupils during their time in Key Stage 2. Children really enjoy learning a foreign language and we know that the earlier they are exposed to one, the faster it is acquired. At Ingleby Mill we have chosen to teach French from Year 3 to Year 6 through a carefully planned curriculum, holding to the widely accepted view that early acquisition of a foreign language facilitates the learning of other languages later in life.
Weekly lessons are timetabled and language learning has three core strands:
- Learning to communicate – with emphasis on oracy (listening, speaking and interacting)
- Learning about language – reading and writing, learning about the writing system, spelling and structure of the language
- Learning about and comparing different cultures – intercultural understanding
