Maths at Ingleby Mill

At Ingleby Mill Primary School, mathematics is a central part of our curriculum, underpinning the development of all areas. It provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. Maths is not seen as an isolated subject — we recognise that it is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering and other forms of employment.

All pupils, when introduced to a key new concept, have the opportunity to build competency through a concrete–pictorial–abstract approach:

  • Concrete – children use concrete objects and manipulatives to help them understand and explain what they are doing
  • Pictorial – children build on this concrete approach using pictorial representations, which can then be used to reason and solve problems
  • Abstract – with the foundations firmly laid, children move to an abstract approach using numbers and key concepts with confidence

We aim to provide a high-quality mathematics curriculum so that all children become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, reason mathematically, and can solve problems by applying their mathematics. Our curriculum is supported by external resources from providers such as White Rose Maths, Abacus, Doodle Maths, Busy Things and Times Table Rock Stars.
