Art and Design at Ingleby Mill Primary
Children will be helped to be appreciate the creative and unique aspect of this area of the curriculum as we prepare them to respond to experiences, be these real or imagined and to grow up appreciating the world around them whilst gaining a sense of place and time in it.
Pupils will be encouraged, from all ages, to develop their understanding of formal elements whilst being supported in experimenting and exploring these alongside the introduction of new techniques.
The children will study from a wide range of styles and times in our art history and see where we fit into these styles and changes. Pupils will develop their own styles over time having produced work in the style of many artists and crafts people and appreciated how we are not replicating others’ work but rather learning to evaluate the work of others and respond to it in our own ways.
The diversity of artists, styles and techniques will help to make the pupils open to new opportunities and appreciate that for us at Ingleby Mill the processes are as big a part in the learning as the finished product.
Mindfulness and mental well-being are significant factors and a consideration in all our lives, and given a priority since the recent pandemic. Art and Design education can play a huge part in helping children to develop as individuals and to know that there is no right or wrong in their responses. An opportunity as our school song says, ‘A place to be me…’

VALUES – Across all areas of learning we value:
Happiness – when we enjoy what we are doing, we learn at our best
Confidence – when we have confidence, we will always ‘have a go’
Creativity – when our creativity is developed, we can think and learn in imaginative ways
Perseverance – when we are encouraged to keep going, even when the going gets tough, we develop resilience, positive outlooks and self-belief
Respect – when we are respectful, we see things through the eyes of others
The National Curriculum and the programmes of study have been considered during the planning stages. It is acknowledged and understood that for those pupils in the Foundation Stage opportunities will be on-going and varied. Children will be encouraged from their earliest entry into school to become active and interested creative learners.
Further information regarding the programme offered to the children is highlighted in the Curriculum overview for Art and Design and shows the learning opportunities planned and the artists to be introduced over time reflecting our broad and balanced curriculum.
