Music at Ingleby Mill

Music is a powerful, unique form of communication that can change the way pupils feel, think and act; it brings together intellect and feeling and enables personal expression, reflection and emotional development. As an integral part of culture past and present, it helps pupils understand themselves and relate to others, forging important links between home, school and the wider world.

In our school, we make music an enjoyable learning experience. We encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences through which we aim to build up the confidence of all children. Singing lies at the heart of good music teaching — our teaching focuses on developing the children’s ability to sing in tune and with other people. Through singing songs, children learn about the structure and organisation of music.

We have a wonderful, well-resourced music studio in school which is timetabled for music lessons throughout the week. Children across school have access to a wide range of tuned and untuned musical instruments and resources including IT-based resources such as GarageBand and Charanga.

At Ingleby Mill, every child in Key Stage 2 learns to play the recorder. Children in Year 4 have their music lessons enriched with a 10-week block of Samba drumming tuition from Tees Valley Music Service. We also have good musical links with a local secondary school.

Whenever we can, we take up opportunities to perform — in class assemblies, end of term performances, singing carols at Tesco at Christmas and performing with other local schools in massed TVMS singing events. Parents can opt for their child to receive individual and group instrumental lessons with external music providers, TVMS or Rock Steady Crew.
